The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has asked the Ghana Police Service to establish a dedicated 24-hour policing unit to support the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
He believes that the policy will succeed if the police are able to provide security and stability for industries, businesses, and organisations operating around the clock.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, the minister insisted that businesses adopting the 24-hour economy model will require robust security measures to protect their activities.
“The aim of this Secretariat is to implement a robust and sustainable policing model that ensures security is guaranteed in both urban and rural areas. Activities do not cease, and neither can our vigilance.
“We are laying the groundwork for a system that is dynamic and responsive to the unique challenges posed by the 24-hour economy. As we embrace this new approach, the safety of businesses, citizens, and workers will be prioritised to ensure that every hour of the day is protected,” he added.
The 24-hour economy championed by President John Dramani Mahama is an economic model whereby the whole or part of the architecture or infrastructure of the economy adjusts to support 24-hour operations of businesses, factories, government services, restaurants, shops, healthcare delivery, banking and other services throughout the day and night.
Some of the benefits of a 24-hour economy are as follows:
- Increases employment opportunities to the citizens especially the youth.
- Enhance business-business opportunities and competitiveness.
- Optimum utilization of resources especially idle resources in a company or an organization.
- Increase spending in the economy
- Boost tourism
- Increases employees’ productivity
- Reduces staffing costs to companies/organizations
- Increases economies of scale for manufacturing industries.
