Nii Baah Afful, the suspect seen in a viral video assaulting a young woman, has been remanded into custody.
The Accra Regional Police Command arrested the young man after the video went viral on social media.
He was seen using what appeared to be a stick to hit his victim, who was carrying a child.
The victim in the video told the suspect she had found a new fiancé who was taking better care of her; hence, she was no longer interested in dating the suspect.
In a split second, the suspect hit the victim. Social media users called on the police to arrest and prosecute him.
He was subsequently arrested and arraigned before the Gender Violence Court. A statement issued by the Accra Regional Police Public Relations Directorate said the suspect and the victim, Francisca Aryee, lived together and have two children.
According to the police, the victim had informed the suspect of leaving for her mother’s house but was pursued by the suspect and allegedly assaulted.
The police added that its swift response to the incident demonstrates its commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all citizens.
The suspect has been remanded for two weeks and is set to reappear in court on April 9, 2025.
