Private legal practitioner Mr Kofi Bekai has expressed satisfaction at the professional conduct of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, describing her as an exceptional personality.
Reacting to the petitions submitted to President John Dramani Mahama seeking her removal, Mr Bekai said these petitions will fail because the Chief Justice has not misconducted herself in any way to warrant removal.
In his view, this is purely politics at play to have removed her, adding that there have been comments made to have her removed, and so this is not surprising.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said, ‘’As a lawyer, I have to bite the bullet. What does it mean? What is going on is pure and simple. Politics is at play. In opposition, they threatened to remove her from office. This is just a pure political game. The petitions were submitted by assigns of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Chief Justice has distinguished herself. She had worked as a private practitioner before she assumed the role at the bench. She worked at the Commercial Court before rising to the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, and now the Chief Justice. She is an experienced personality. A woman of her stature will not engage in any form of misconduct. The ongoing process will amount to nothing. I am not engaging in politics, but she has conducted herself so well. She has performed her duties in a sacred manner.’’
He stressed, ‘’The Chief Justice has transformed the judiciary. She has made several reforms, and so I don’t know what they will say about her that will succeed in having her removed. That is what it has to be established as pure and true, that she has misconducted herself to warrant her removal from office”.
