Former Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has underscored the need for competent persons to be appointed to manage the GoldBod.
He opined that the initiative is a good one but has questioned those appointed to manage affairs at the GoldBod.
The former Suame MP said the people tasked for the purpose lack the competence and work experience to deliver efficiency.
“It is a good intent that they have expressed; you expect to populate the board with people with demonstrable competencies in commodity trading and so on. If you take people with no work experience, jobs for the boys, we can’t leave the country’s gold in the hands of such people,” he said.
“If we get it wrong at the very outset, it will be dangerous for us as a country,” he said at a public dialogue on the 2025 National Budget organised by the Kumasi Bloc Members of Parliament.
The Ghana Gold Board aims to regulate the gold industry, stabilise the cedi and maximise revenue from gold exports.
According to the government, the board will act as a specialised agency to formalise gold trading, particularly from the small-scale mining sector, while promoting traceability to enhance the international reputation of Ghanaian gold.
It will also serve as the sole buyer of gold from legal small-scale miners through licensed aggregators, as well as the sole assayer, seller, and exporter of gold within this segment.
This is to reduce gold smuggling, improve foreign exchange accumulation, and support the stabilisation of the Cedi.
