Assin South Member of Parliament Rev John Ntim Fodjour has described the budget for Ghana’s National Security Council and its agencies as grossly inadequate.
The lawmaker believes that with the critical role the Council plays in maintaining peace and security, the allocated funds fall short of meeting essential needs, totalling GH¢190 million.
He is also of the view that the welfare of correctional facilities is being overlooked. With approximately 14,000 inmates, the daily ration of 1 Cedi 80 pesewas per inmate is insufficient, expected to cover three meals.
“A minimum allocation of ten cities per day would be more reasonable,” he proposed.
In addition, renovation and security fencing for prison facilities are also pressing concerns, with a shortfall of over GH¢160 million.
He said it’s crucial that the Ministry of Finance reassesses this budget to ensure the dignity and security of inmates and correctional facilities.
The former Deputy Education Minister also stated that the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) plays an important role in public safety, but it is frequently misunderstood and underfunded.
He stated that, despite being the first point of contact during fires, they are criticised for response times, equipment issues, and hydrant problems.
The GNFS needs enough resources to effectively prevent and manage fires.
Currently, they are dealing with obsolete equipment, with over eight pieces in need of replacement, he said.
