Mrs Hannah Biamah Baafi Gunn, Planning Manager for the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), reports that the number of recorded road accidents in January and February 2025 has surpassed that of 2024.
She lamented that the figures are alarming and called for urgent steps from all stakeholders to maintain discipline on our roads to save lives.
In an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she said accidents recorded in January and February 2025 were 2,456, as compared to 2024, where 2,250 cases were recorded.
Mrs Baafi Gunn stated that in percentage terms, the figure for 2025 has increased by 8.7%, which is not good.
”There are 4,172 vehicles involved, compared to 3,910 last year. Unfortunately, this has also increased by 6.7%, which is not good,” she said.
She told the host that there were 1,428 commercial vehicles involved in the accidents, while 1,665 were private vehicles.
She revealed that there were 498 deaths recorded in January and February, up from 359 the previous year, representing a 35% increase.
So nearly 500 people died in road accidents in January and February alone. This is concerning and requires discipline on our roads. If this trend continues, we will have an alarming number. There were 2,927 injuries reported during the period, up from 2,552 the previous year, representing a 14.7% increase. The number of pedestrian knockdowns increased by 17.6% to 448 from 381 the previous year. The figures are alarming, and if we do not address them, they will increase astronomically.”
According to her, over-speeding was the main cause of these road accidents, although you cannot rule out drunk driving, wrongful overtaking and other road traffic breaches.
