The Member of Parliament for Suhum constituency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, says the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers should not be politicised.
He posited that this is a serious issue that must be investigated and all those found culpable prosecuted.
The lawmaker indicated that the containers did not have wings to fly from the port and that it took the involvement of some persons who must be fished out and punished in accordance with our laws.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr. Bekoe posited that ”these containers did have wings to fly from the ports. Some people may be behind it. You cannot also carry them on your head like plantains or bananas. That is why it is important to conduct a thorough investigation into the missing containers so that those who moved the containers would be fished. The politicisation and blame games are needless. The containers are worth over Ghc 10 billion, and so this is not a trivial matter.
We need a thorough investigation. It is not an NDC or NPP matter. It is a serious matter that requires proper and thorough investigation. That is my view on this serious matter,’ he told host Kwabena Agyapong.
Meanwhile, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
They are made up of 10 foreign nationals and four Ghanaians.
Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor had revealed that preliminary investigations had shown that the disappearances, orchestrated by a syndicate, had been happening since 2019.
According to him, he was resolute in breaking the syndicate, stressing that “we would chase everybody and pursue every organisation that has been operating this cartel.”
“Clearly, as you can see, these are ECG cables; they are meant to be used by ECG, but they end up in these factories, and then they smelter them and produce aluminium rods. That is criminal.”
