National Chairperson for the People’s National Party (PNP), Madam Janet Nablah, has asked the judiciary not to allow the Executive to abuse its constitutional powers in removing Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo.
She believes that removing a Chief Justice is serious business that must follow established procedures and that no government should use political machination to remove the head of the judiciary.
Madam Nablah has therefore advised the judiciary, particularly the judges, to stand up against any political interference in their sacred constitutional duties.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she indicated President John Dramani Mahama should not allow his political party to influence his decision in undemocratically removing the Chief Justice.
She remarked that the NDC is behaving as if we are in the military regime by abusing its powers, intimidating political opponents and using frivolous means to remove heads of institutions who have protection of tenure in the constitution.
She served notice that Ghanaian women will be disappointed in the Chief Justice if she allows the current government to remove her from office through frivolous means.
“Ghanaian women will boo the Chief Justice if she allows herself to be removed from office. She should stay resolute because she has more power than the president now; use it to protect herself and the other justices.
She believes, “Our politicians should not possess the authority to remove the Chief Justice. They should not be allowed to appoint a Chief Justice. It should be codified in our laws that the Judiciary Council bears the responsibility for appointing the Chief Justice. Our political leaders should be stopped from interfering with the judiciary. The same principle must apply when selecting security heads for police, military, and other agencies. We must stop the manipulation of our judicial and security agencies.”
