The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the safety and security of mobile money agents.
MOMAG first commended President John Dramani Mahama for assenting to the bill repealing the E-Levy.
Kingsley Amoako Atta, General Secretary for MOMAG, stated that they are extremely grateful to the government for fulfilling its pledge in scrapping the E-Levy.
President John Dramani Mahama has signed the bills repealing the e-levy, betting tax, and emissions levy on Wednesday, April 02, 2025.
Other bills assented to by the president are the Value Added Tax (VAT) Amendment Bill, Income Tax Amendment Bill 2025, Petroleum Revenue Management Amendment Bill 2025, Public Financial Management Amendment Bill, Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Bill, Energy Sector Levy Act, Gold Board Bill 2025 and Growth and Sustainability Levy Act.
The move aligns with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) commitment to alleviating the financial burden on Ghanaians.
Kingsley Amoako Atta, commenting on this, said the move was commendable because it will increase mobile money activities and enhance their businesses but was quick to add that one major challenge confronting their activities is the increase in robbery incidents against mobile money agents.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Kingsley Amoako Atta stated that “the decision to scrap the E-Levy is commendable, but one other challenge we want the government to address is the increase in robbery cases against mobile money agents. Our appeal is that we want authorities to prioritise our safety and security”.
“In recent times, mobile money agents have been subjected to robbery attacks. Some of our members have lost their lives. We appreciate the president’s efforts but urge him to address this pressing concern. We request his support in combating these robbery attacks. The propised 24-hour economy cannot be achieved unless these incidents are curbed. Enhanced security measures for mobile money agents will enable us to contribute to the 24-hour economy. Therefore, we are calling on the president to instruct the interior minister and other security heads to address these concerns,” he noted.
