Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has asked the government to scrap the imposition of exam fees for basic school students.
The education think tank says the imposition of the fees could lead to the exclusion of students from assessments due to financial constraints.
A statement issued by Eduwatch posited that some school heads are demanding fees for examinations and printing, threatening to prevent pupils who do not pay from receiving their exams.
According to Eduwatch, although they support voluntary parental contributions towards school development, such contributions should align with policies governing free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (fCUBE).
It referenced the Pre-Tertiary Education Act of 2020 (Act 1049) to support its argument, saying basic education in Ghana is free, compulsory, and universal, with explicit provisions ensuring no child is excluded due to economic challenges.
It had therefore asked the Ministry of Education to ensure timely funding for school-based assessments.
Eduwatch further called on the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to guarantee that no pupil is denied access to end-of-term examinations due to unpaid fees.
