Samuel Nana Appiah Owusu, Executive Director, Global Intelligence and Security Analysis Centre (GISAC), says the politicisation of alleged drug trafficking and money laundering incidents involving two aircraft—AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B—is unfortunate.
The analyst lamented the issue has taken a political twist, and that will affect how the matter is treated.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that regardless of how we want to handle this matter, it bothers on the image, credibility and integrity of Ghana hence the need to avoid politicising it.
He believed that we shouldn’t make this political gymnastics either, and that those who are behind it, if indeed there was any carry of suspicious drugs and money as alleged, are likely to escape from justice.
Samuel Nana Appiah said the political twist to the issue is erasing all available evidence that can help to investigate and probably get to the bottom of it, either to confirm or deny.
”In my opinion, as a nation, we should be bothered by how our international credibility would be measured and how our integrity passes international telescopes when it comes to tracking and measuring countries in respect of drug trading and money laundering, which are very strong organised crimes that the UN Charter and drug-related issues frown upon.”
He insisted that the incident has repercussions on Ghana, ”so if the allegation is true, we can never want to cover it up or divert it. As far as the international community has developed an interest in it, they would find every means possible to investigate the matter, and if they suspect any slight attempt by Ghanaian authority to cover up, they will go down to the last skeleton and investigate it thoroughly. At the end of the day, it will put Ghana on red alert, which will not be good for us as a country”.
He has therefore called for an independent probe into the matter to protect our image and integrity as a country ”so that the international community will not have any hint of a cover-up and evoke other bodies to investigate without the knowledge of Ghana”.
