A civil society group, Africa Centre for Democracy and Socioeconomic Development (CDS Africa), has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to disregard petitions seeking the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, and her fellow commissioners: Mr. Samuel Tetteh, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, and Dr. Peter Appiahene.
The group argued that while the petitions submitted for the removal of the EC Chair and her deputies may be legal, the President should ignore them and retain the Commissioners since that would promote national stability, preserve institutional independence, and advance Ghana’s democratic progress over political expediency.
“By choosing not to forward these petitions to the Chief Justice for action, Your Excellency would reaffirm your commitment to strengthening our democracy and ensuring that Ghana’s Electoral Commission remains a truly independent institution, free from political interference,” the petition read.
“You have the opportunity to set a historic precedent—one that prevents future presidents from removing electoral commissioners appointed by their predecessors, thereby shielding the EC from undue political influence,” the petition added.
