The Minority in Parliament has asked the security agencies to swiftly investigate the cause of the renewed violence in Bawku and take immediate steps to prevent further escalation.
The caucus was reacting to the violent incident that occurred on April 10, 2025, between the police and residents, leading to the death of one person and the injury of five others.
Addressing the press in Accra on Friday, April 11, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Assin South and ranking member on the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, noted that the unresolved conflict was unfortunate and needed an urgent intervention.
“On the curfew that has been tightened, we’re urging all security agencies to immediately investigate the causes of the escalation. And take urgent steps to address,” he stated.
“In approaching matters in Bawku enclave to do so with absolute professionalism, circumspection, fairness but firmness, in a very diplomatic way, taking into account the cultural and emotional sensitivities around this conflict,” he said.
“We, the Minority, convey our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families,” he said.
“To those injured, and to all individuals and organisations who have lost property as a result of the recent violence, our thoughts are with you.”
He went on to state that “One of the key strategies we recommend is for the government to lead an honest and inclusive engagement with the youth and other stakeholders,” he stated.
“When their concerns are genuinely listened to and addressed, the root causes of the violence can be resolved, and peace can return.”
“This will create the necessary atmosphere for the Otumfuo’s mediation to continue effectively, and for other stakeholders to lend their support in maintaining peace,” he noted.
“However, this recent escalation is a setback, and we are calling for calm and de-escalation so that the ongoing mediation can proceed without disruption.” He added.
