Former deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Obiri Boahen, has noted that it is needless to send armed security operatives to go after suspects who are not hardened criminals.
The private legal practitioner noted that it is senseless and purely stupid for masked security officers to storm or raid the residence of individuals who are not a threat to society.
The best approach he posted is to invite the individuals over for questioning.
He was responding to the attempted arrest of Assin South MP and Ranking on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament.
“The question we need to ask is that if the person is not a hardened criminal, do you send armed and masked security operatives after the person in the name of arrest? Is it a normal thing for our security operatives to dress in that manner to go and arrest somebody who is not a notorious armed robber?
“Is it common? Are we in a jungle? Are we going to arrest a cocaine drug baron? This was needless and unfortunate. Even cocaine barons in cocaine-producing countries are not treated this way. Let’s not even see Ntim Fordjour as an MP. Common sense should tell us that we don’t treat human beings this way.”
Obiri Boahen said this is so wrong, and those who have supported what is happening should be ashamed of themselves.
He indicated that Ghana is a country with laws, and our leaders should not abuse their office.
“Ghana, within a matter of months, has turned lawless and without any direction. People have abandoned their sense and are making useless and political comments to satisfy their political agenda,” he said on Nyankonton Mu on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He advised the government to direct its attention to providing stability in Bawku, saying, “Whether NDC or NPP is in power, we have to find lasting solutions to the Bawku crisis.”
