Political analyst Mr Samuel Boateng has condemned the lawlessness that has characterised the nomination of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country.
He stated that the acts perpetuated by party supporters and residents in the areas that the persons were nominated from are undemocratic.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he posited that the president has the authority to appoint people to represent him at the various assemblies.
“The Constitution grants the President the authority to appoint representatives at various MMDAs. The nominees have been selected but have yet to assume their roles, and already their competencies are being questioned. This is truly unfortunate and undermines the democratic process.
If you, the ones agitating against the nomination, don’t know the individuals nominated, the party knows them. Burning tyres and engaging in acts of violence is disgraceful and a shame. We should not entertain that because it paints a negative impression about Ghana,” he noted.
He further asserted that the best approach in nominating the MMDCEs should not be left for the political party but rather Ghanaians should be allowed to vote, or we can have a selection process where the party could select some individuals and allow a Public Service Commission, which is non-political, to vet and make recommendations for the President.
“I strongly believe we have to elect the MMDCEs so that Ghanaians will vote their preferred choice, or if the party elects about four nominees, a Public Service Commission will vet them and make recommendations to the President to appoint the one he prefers for each of the MMDAs.”
