The Concerned Citizens of Akyem Asiakwa in the Abuakwa South Municipality, Eastern Region, have staged a protest against the activities of illegal miners.
The group complained bitterly that illegal mining activities have caused damage to the environment and remain a threat to their agricultural lands and water sources.
They have therefore demanded immediate action and warned illegal miners in the area to desist from their criminal activities.
According to Tweneboah Kodua, leader of the group, the situation has become dire, with residents relying on sachet water due to the pollution of their water sources.
“Illegal mining activities have not only affected our water sources but also devastated agricultural lands, undermining the livelihoods of farmers. Our protest is to send a clear message that illegal mining is a threat to human existence, and we are against that.
We are appealing to the government and stakeholders to intensify their actions against illegal mining. We are united as a community demanding an end to galamsey. Our traditional leaders have done their best, and as a group, we are doing our part.”
