Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Global Intelligence and Security Analysis Centre, Samuel Nana Appiah, has described the latest approach of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to use maximum force in dealing with the Bawku crisis as a step in the right direction.
He stated that the Bawku crisis, which has caused the death of several individuals, has prolonged for far too long, and it was time it was dealt with once and for all.
Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has served a word of caution to individuals behind the ongoing crisis in Bawku.
According to him, any attacks on civilians or military personnel will be treated as acts of extremism.
He stated that if these attacks do not stop, the Ghana Armed Forces would use force in dealing with those involved.
Reacting to these remarks, Samuel Nana Appiah indicated that the crisis has reached a point where all the forces available must be marshalled in dealing with the matter.
“I think there is absolutely nothing wrong for the military to apply maximum force in dealing with a crisis. The Chief of Army Staff has not erred in cautioning the residents that the military was prepared to use maximum force in dealing with those engaging in the violent clashes. It is expected of him to caution the people and let them understand that the law will be applied because what is happening has reached alarming levels. It was also expected of him that he would speak the military language.
Although mediation was important, the violence ought to end, and I fully support the military in using maximum force against those involved in the crisis. We can no longer watch on and allow innocent people to be killed in the crisis.”
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said, ’The residents must be told point blank that what they are doing is not the best and it would be best for them to accept to lay down their weapons and pursue peace and unity or face the wrath of the military”.
He stressed that ‘’what is happening in Bawku has always taken the shape of extremism and terrorism, and when you see it as such, you should up your game, change your approach and revise your plan to ensure that you meet it squarely, send a message to those involved and let them know that you know their modus operandi and will face them with full maximum force’’.
