Deputy Minister of Education Dr Clement Apaak has slammed the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for demanding the reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo.
The Builsa South Member of Parliament says it is most unreasonable for anyone in the group to make such demands.
He was responding to the proposal made by the president of the GBA for the suspended chief justice to be reinstated.
The Ghana Bar Association at its mid-year conference held at Labadi Beach Hotel passed a resolution with a call on the president to revoke the suspension of the Chief Justice, her ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Members of the Bar expressed their displeasure with the import and tone of the statement of the Ghana Bar Association dated the 24th day of April, 2025.
The lawyers criticised the suspension of the Chief Justice based on the said petitions and the determination of a prima facie case and called for a constitutional instrument to guide the processes for the removal of judges.
But reacting to the call by the GBA, Dr Apaak said the lawyers ought to commend the president for his fidelity to the law instead of criticising him.
He was also shocked that the lawyers of the Association, who should know better, are rather asking the President to abandon his constitutional duties.
In a Facebook post, the deputy minister asked the GBA to use the courts if they are convinced the president has broken any law.
His post read “It is most unreasonable for any group to demand of a President to jettison his constitutional duty because it is displeased.
Has President Mahama violated any law or done anything untoward in his handling of the petitions against the Chief Justice? Certainly not. If the GBA thinks otherwise, the courts are there.
In fact, the GBA should rather applaud President Mahama for his fidelity to the supreme law of the land, the constitution.
An Association of lawyers asking a President to abandon his constitutional duty, my goodness!”
