The Ghana Police Service has cautioned the Ghanaian public about the rise in online romance scam cases, emphasising the importance of remaining vigilant.
Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, issued the caution at a press briefing on Friday, May 9, 2025.
She provided an update on the rescue of two Ghanaian women who had been kidnapped and assaulted in Nigeria.
The senior police officer announced that the two victims arrived via African World Airlines in Ghana at the Kotoka International Airport.
After providing the update, she then cautioned Ghanaians to remain vigilant since romance scams and other online fraud were on the rise.
‘’Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to alert the general public to a concerning rise in romance scams and other forms of online fraud. We urge everyone to exercise heightened caution when interacting with unknown persons online. Please refrain from sharing personal or financial information and report any suspicious behaviour to the police immediately.’’
