Acting Executive Director of the Forest Services Division of the Forestry Commission, Lydia Opoku, has admonished Ghanaians to support their efforts in dealing with illegal mining.
She underscored the need for opinion leaders, chiefs and residents in affected communities to support the fight against illegal mining.
She called for protection for forest guards fighting illegal mining.
According to persons engaged in galamsey are often protected by armed thugs wielding sophisticated weapons.
Madam Lydia Opoku made the appeal while speaking to journalists in Kumasi on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after touring some galamsey sites.
“The miners are being protected by armed tasks and the sophisticated machines they are holding; we cannot match them. So, we are pleading with the communities and chiefs to assist to protect the Forestry Commission to protect the forest,” he stated.
