The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old notorious suspected armed robber who had been on the run since 2016.
The suspect, Michael Owusu Ansah, popularly known as Baby Last, was declared wanted by the police in connection with his alleged involvement in a robbery and the murder of Police Officer G/Cpl Frank Essel of the SWAT Unit in the Ashanti region.
Details available indicate that the robbery occurred on May 19, 2016, at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso.
Providing an update to journalists at the Ashanti Regional Police Command on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the PRO, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, said the suspect was arrested on April 22, 2025.
He stated that Ansah was apprehended by police intelligence officers, along with four of his accomplices.
He revealed that the suspect has also confessed to taking part in several street and residential robberies in Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, Asuoyeboah, and nearby areas.
“Baby Last has been on the police wanted list since 2016, when Commissioner, Rtd. Kofi Boakye, was with us. We declared him wanted. I must announce that he has been arrested in connection with this robbery. He was also connected with the robbery and murder of Police Officer G/Cpl Frank Essel of the SWAT Unit, which occurred at the Open Space hotel at Denchemuoso in 2016,” he stated.
The five suspects were arraigned before the Atasomanso Circuit Court on May 13, 2025. They were remanded into police custody and are scheduled to reappear on June 4, 2025.
