The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has cautioned that attacks on firefighters will henceforth not be condoned.
He has therefore advised the Ghanaian public to desist from doing that or face prosecution.
The minister gave the caution at the commissioning of a new fire station at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region; the minister warned that anyone arrested for assaulting fire officers will be prosecuted.
He also disclosed that police officers will be deployed alongside firefighters to scenes, and individuals who assault the officers will be apprehended.
“We are going to enhance the safety of our staff from the national fire service. This is a collaboration with the Ghana Police Service. Anytime our firefighters move to a fire site or move to a place for rescue, the police will be in their company, and those who find it interesting to attack them will be immediately arrested and prosecuted. The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, on his part, admonished the public to also take proactive steps to prevent fire outbreaks.
We must all be reminded that safety is a shared responsibility.” Firefighters will be there, ready to respond, but we as a community must continue to support them, respect their work and take proactive steps towards fire prevention and emergency preparedness,” he added.
