The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 2,241 foreign nationals in a targeted operation to clamp down on organised street begging in the Greater Accra Region.

Officers from the service embarked on the exercise on Friday, May 15, 2025, and went to areas such as Circle, Okaishie and Kaneshie.
The intelligence-led exercise took place in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025.
A total of 909 adults and 1,332 children were arrested. Among them, 961 were male and 1,280 were female.

Minister of Interior Muntaka Mubarak commended the officers and has called for a similar exercise in Kumasi, Tamale and other areas.
“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security. I’ve seen the public reactions and calls for similar action in places like Kumasi, Tamale, and other communities. Please be assured that this is a nationwide exercise that began in Accra and will be extended to other regions soon.

I count on your continued cooperation and support when the operations reach your communities. Let’s work together to keep our streets safe,” the minister said in a Facebook post.
