Three individuals have been confirmed dead following the downpour that triggered severe flooding across parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The confirmation was done by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Adentan Municipal Assembly, Ella Esiman Nongo.
“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom, and a gentleman around New Legon,” she stated in an interview with Accra based Citi FM.
The MCE disclosed that emergency response teams were able to rescue most stranded residents in the Ashiyie area.
She was, however, quick to add that many communities, especially low-lying ones, remain at high risk due to poor drainage and indiscriminate development.
“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing,” she said.
Meanwhile, she has underscored the need for stricter enforcement of building regulations and urgent structural interventions to address the perennial flooding in the region, particularly in flood-prone areas.
“If we don’t tackle the indiscipline in our building practices and enforce the rules, these tragedies will keep recurring,” she added.
A downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025, caused severe flooding in several areas of Accra, disrupting traffic and daily activities.
Communities such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, parts of Tema, Adentan-Dodowa, and other parts of the capital were flooded, forcing many people to climb onto the roofs of their buildings for safety.
