Greater Accra Regional Madam Linda Ocloo says unauthorised buildings along waterways are the primary cause of the floods that occur in some areas after the downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The minister stated that the rains have exposed a major problem, which authorities are prepared to address.
She disclosed that the assessment revealed that individuals have built their buildings on the capital’s major drains.
Speaking on Frontline at Rainbow Radio 87.5FM. She declared that “the only measure and solution to this is to demolish all buildings that block the drains.” In his Eid-Fitr message, President John Dramani Mahama directed the regional minister to demolish all unauthorised buildings. We began demolitions, but afterward, the owners will rebuild the structures. We take a step forward and another step backward. When this happens, our efforts are rendered useless.”
Madam Ocloo, the government is frequently blamed for these issues, when in reality, human behaviour is responsible for many of them.
She stated that the flooding situation would need to be minimised, if not completely stopped.
She went on to say that after all of the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives are sworn in, there will be an intensified demolition exercise in all of the assemblies.
Madam Ocloo has therefore issued a warning to all those who have buildings on waterways to evacuate before they arrive.
“The demolition exercise is a collective exercise. We will soon announce numbers so that Ghanaians can call and report from their communities where people have built on waterways, allowing us to all fight the flooding in Accra. We have also directed the region’s MMDCEs to take appropriate action in response to this situation,” she added.
