The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Linda Ocloo, has revealed that the government has a long-term plan to construct an ultra-modern market to provide a safer and more secure ground for traders.
This forms part of the long-term goals in decongesting exercise currently ongoing in the region.
On May 20, 2025, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly started its announced decongestion exercise.
The exercise targeted areas around the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, Zongo Lane, and Opera Square to Adabraka on the first day.
Day 2 saw officials focus on Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School and Cow Lane, UTC Road to Timber Market, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, including Las Palmas and Glamour Road, while
Day 3 targeted the remaining portions of the Circle and the Kaneshie enclave, including Pamprom Lane and the footbridges.
Providing an update, the Greater Regional Minister indicated that the exercise has been generally successful.
She added that prior stakeholder consultations had been held and confirmed that enough space exists within designated markets to accommodate traders.
The minister said the exercise is in strict enforcement of the AMA Hawkers Bye-Laws (2017) and Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), both of which prohibit activities that impede pedestrian and vehicular movement in public areas.
She assured the public that the exercise would not be a one-time event, but would continue in the region, adding that “the demolition of unauthorised buildings had not been stopped, but suspended following the approval of the appointed MMDCEs.” The majority of them have been approved, so we can resume the exercise. It will be done until our term of office expires.
When asked if there were plans to construct a new market, she answered in the affirmative.
” During his Greater Accra Regional Tour, President John Dramani Mahama promised Ghanaians that his government would build new markets in the region and renovate those that needed it. He also promised that expansion work would be done in existing ones so that we could have fire stations, nurseries, and other amenities. But the most important point is that there are spaces in the existing markets, so the traders would have to return to their spaces.”
