A family of three was trapped in their WA home for nearly three hours after a large fig tree fell during a windstorm, blocking the entrance.
They were rescued after sending distress calls.
The Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Issah Nurah Danwanaa, plans to remove aged and dangerous trees to prevent similar incidents, citing several recent cases of uprooted trees causing significant property damage.
Details indicate that the trapped individuals were eventually rescued by a relative after sending distress calls to emergency services, friends, and other family members.
The Chief Executive visited the scene and stated that the assembly is liaising with relevant agencies to remove aged and dangerous trees across the municipality.
He noted that in the past month, the Wa Municipality has experienced severe windstorms that uproted several large trees, causing significant damage to property valued at thousands of Ghana cedis.
He said, “I have observed that the big trees that are causing this havoc in town are old trees, and some are so huge that a little wind can easily uproot the entire tree. So what we will do is that we will go round together with NADMO officials, ex-dervice officials and Forestry Commission and see how best we can uproot these big trees to avoid these disasters.”
He underscored the need for regular assessment of the trees and removal of the ones that can pose a significant threat to the safety of the people.
