The Minority Caucus has expressed disappointment and concern regarding the closure of the country’s diplomatic mission in Washington, D.C., citing alleged fraudulent activities by a single individual as the reason.
A statement issued by the caucus highlighted potential far-reaching consequences of the move, including disruptions to Ghanaian citizens’ welfare abroad, impacts on foreign service personnel, and reputational damage to Ghana internationally.
The caucus criticised the handling of the situation, describing it as lacking tact and diplomacy, and argued that such a significant decision should have been managed through appropriate diplomatic and legal channels.
Samuel Abu Jinapor, Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, emphasised that the Foreign Affairs Minister should have briefed Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee and pursued thorough investigations before taking action.
The caucus questioned whether the decision was well-considered or politically motivated, warning that it risks undermining Ghana’s foreign policy credibility.
They are advocating for increased transparency, proper consultation, and swift measures to mitigate the fallout from the mission’s closure.
He claimed they were both stunned and surprised to learn that the mission in Washington, DC had been temporarily closed due to an individual’s actions.
The member claimed that several others who misbehaved in a similar manner had been punished more tactfully compared to the approach the minister used in this case.
He called the minister’s actions needless populism.
