The Executive Director of Revenue Mobilisation Africa, Geoffrey Kabutey Ocansey, has commended the recent meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and civil society organisations aimed at establishing the Governance Advisory Council, describing it as a step in the right direction.
He noted that the president has demonstrated his resolve to enhance accountability and transform Ghana’s governance system.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Ocansey stated that the Council will have a core objective of playing an independent watchdog, monitoring human rights, corruption, and overall governance in Ghana.
The professional development communicator and social advocate with a strong passion for institutional and human development opined that this is a practice adopted across the globe and Ghana will not be the only country practising this.
The economist explained that if the establishment of the Council is successful, it will help Ghana develop an annual report on human rights, corruption, and governance, which would promote transparency and progress.
He said, as a president who has demonstrated his commitment to creating a transparent, accountable government that reflects the values of Ghana, we have a responsibility to support him to succeed.
”President Mahama has seen the need for the involvement of Ghanaians in supporting his government to deliver on his mandate. He has planned to establish a governing council that will have the responsibility of playing an independent watchdog, monitoring human rights, corruption, and overall governance in Ghana. This is a positive initiative, and the meeting with us was to solicit our inputs towards this initiative,” he stated.
