Ghana’s Embassy in Washington DC, which was temporarily shut down over visa fraud activities, will be reopened today, May 29, 2025.
Following the recall of staff and suspension of local staff of the embassy, a team of ‘’seasoned diplomats’ led by a team lead from the ministry was tasked with the responsibility of managing the office.
The team is to ensure a total overhaul of the systems, restore integrity in the operations of the embassy and complete what the ministry described as ongoing structural reforms.
An information technology (IT) team has been deployed to reconfigure the website and payment platforms to do away with all unofficial and unauthorised IT systems.
It would be recalled that the facility was shut down after it was discovered that a locally recruited IT staff member had created an unauthorised link on the embassy’s website, redirecting visa and passport applicants to a private company where they were charged unapproved fees.
The matter has since been reported to the auditor general and the attorney general for further action and appropriate sanctions.
