Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed disappointment in the decision by officials at the National Intelligence Bureau to grant him and other officials of the New Patriotic Party access to Bernard Antei Bosiako, aka Chairman Wontumi.
The Vice President and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin were unsuccessful in their attempt to have access to the Ashanti Regional Chairman at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra.
Dr Bawumia is said to have agreed to stand in as surety for Wontumi for the Ghc50 million.
He is currently being investigated for multiple criminal offences, including money laundering, fraud and causing financial loss to the state.
He was previously in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation but was transferred to the NIB headquarters.
Speaking to journalists after his visit, Dr Bawumia disclosed that he and Afenyo-Markin were unable to meet with Wontumi.
Meanwhile, he has called for calm and assured party supporters that the party will follow due process to ensure that Wontumi is released.
“We are going to follow the due process, the legal process, to make sure that he is released as soon as possible. I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to make sure that he is out.
“I believe that we will be successful. But we have to be calm to make sure that we do not take the law into our own hands,” Dr Bawumia stated.
