The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has asked the minority in Parliament to go to court if they have any issues about the continuous detention and bail conditions of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), still remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
He was arrested in connection with allegations of fraud, money laundering, and involvement in organised crime.
The Minority Caucus on Thursday, May 29, 2025, stated a walkout in parliament and threatened a boycott of all parliamentary proceedings until the bail conditions have been waived.
This was after their request for parliament to intervene in the matter failed.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin slammed EOCO over what it described as poor handling of the case.
“I pray that my colleagues on the opposite side will support this so that with one voice, EOCO will know that when it came to this matter — Chairman Wontumi — Parliament stood united in demanding fairness,” Afenyo-Markin said.
However, Deputy Speaker Ahiafor, in responding, stated that the House was not a court of law; hence, they should seek legal redress in the appropriate forum.
He stated that there was the need to respect institutional boundaries and called for due process to prevail.
“I believe this is a matter that can adequately be addressed by the judiciary. For me, if a decision of an institution can be challenged at the court, if a security agency slaps a bail condition that you feel is hard, I do not think Parliament has the authority to call for a review of that particular decision,” he stated.
