President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at plans to expand Ghana’s cocoa sector by adding 200,000 hectares of cocoa farms to the country’s production capacity.
He announced this on Saturday, May 31, 2025, while touring the Ahafo Region as part of his national Thank You tour.
“Plans are underway to revamp the collapsed cocoa sector. Incentives will be provided to our hard-working farmers to increase cocoa production. We aim to add 200,000 hectares of cocoa to Ghana’s output to increase the income of ours, he stated.
The president also indicated that the chief executive of COCOBOD, Randy Abbey, had informed him that a new cocoa producer price will be announced in August, which he assured farmers would be “a very good price”.
“So those of you who do not have cocoa farms, go and start looking for land and start planting cocoa,” he encouraged.
Meanwhile, he has directed the Ministry for Roads and Highways to urgently prioritise the rehabilitation and completion of the Maaban-Goaso Highway.
“We will not abandon projects that were begun by the past government. We’re here to finish what we started and to build what is needed. We will soon have contractors back at work,” President Mahama stated.
He reiterated his commitment to continuing development projects, regardless of which administration initiated them.
“We have taken inventory of all abandoned and uncompleted projects by all previous governments,” he said.
“I have directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to prioritise the completion of the Maaban-Goaso Highway. This is a crucial link for mobility and trade across the region. In addition to the urban roads in Goaso, Kenyase, and Acherensua, these town roads should be upgraded to support urban growth and improve transport safety,” he said.
