Madam Nyonkonpa Daniels, Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, has demanded the arrest and prosecution of chiefs involved in the sale of lands at the Ramsar site to prospective buyers.
According to Madam Daniels, while the recent demolition exercise conducted by authorities at the site was a step in the right direction, it would be incomplete without holding the chiefs accountable.
She emphasised that the chiefs were aware that the sites were reserved and should not have been sold for development or construction purposes.
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in collaboration with National Security and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), recently demolished unauthorised structures encroaching on watercourses within the Sakumo Ramsar site.
The demolition aimed to restore the natural flow of floodwaters, reduce the risk of future flooding, and protect the wetland’s integrity.
Madam Daniels asserted that the chiefs who sold the lands, despite knowing its reserved status, must be arrested and prosecuted for their role in the crisis.
She described their actions as ‘pure wickedness and greed’.
“The chiefs who sold the lands to the affected victims of the demolishing exercise must be arrested. They are part of the problem and must be prosecuted. How come the chiefs sell land to people when they know the area is a reserved site? The chiefs who sold the lands must be arrested.
This is pure wickedness and greed. Those who bought the land struggled to raise money and now have lost all their investments to the demolition exercise. The chiefs are deceiving people and taking their money.”
Madam Daniels also advised the affected individuals to collectively take legal action against the chiefs who sold them the land.
