The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
He was released Monday evening (June 2, 2025) after meeting his bail conditions.
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, confirmed this to journalists at the EOCO headquarters.
“I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released. He’s gone home to relax. We will inform you of any new developments. Let’s thank Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, for the support.”
Party members had since his arrest been storming the facility, denying his release.
The Ghanaian politician is expected to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations.
He is being investigated in connection with multiple criminal offences, including fraud, money laundering and causing financial loss to the state.
Wontumi was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with two justified sureties.
His legal team, led by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions were fulfilled by Friday, May 30; however, his release had to be delayed due to a case that was filed by private legal practitioner Gary Nimako Marfo seeking to vary the bail conditions.
The case was finally withdrawn on Monday, June 2, 2025.
