Private legal practitioner Mr Kofi Bekai has asked Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng to exercise restraint in his quest to redeclare former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a wanted person.
The lawyer explained that the former finance minister has, through his lawyers, informed the OSP of his medical condition.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the proposal by the former minister for the engagement with the OSP to be done electronically was not a bad idea, considering Mr Ofori-Atta’s condition.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has asked former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to report himself in person at its headquarters on Monday, June 2, 2025, or face the consequences.
A statement issued by the OSP today, Sunday, June 1, warned that should Mr Ofori-Atta fail to honour the summons, he will be reinstated on its list of wanted persons and officially declared a fugitive from justice.
However, in response to this, Mr Bekai advised the OSP to proceed with caution.
“I will admonish the OSP to proceed with caution. Ofori-Atta has informed you about his condition, and his lawyers have also confirmed it. His proposal for an electronic meeting was not a bad one. Even at the High Court, video conferencing is permitted. The High Court rules allow for videoconferencing, particularly for persons outside of the jurisdiction. Sickness is not something to take lightly, so if the former minister has officially informed you of his illness, you should take that into account.’’
Mr Bekai’s forced arrival in Ghana is also dangerous because it could cause a serious health crisis, especially if he has not recovered.
