Two young men from Nalerigu in the North East Region have been arrested by the Savannah Regional Police Command for allegedly defrauding the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Biawurbi Salisu, by impersonating the overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Nayiri Mahami Abdulai Sherigah.
According to police sources, the suspects orchestrated a scheme in which they posed as Nayiri, using a convincing imitation of his voice in a phone call to the minister. During the call, they appealed for support under the guise of a royal request.
Believing the plea to be genuine, Spear FM reported that the minister hosted the suspects in Damongo and facilitated their travel to Accra, including covering their accommodation costs, for what was presented as an official engagement.
However, the charade began to fall apart when the suspects presented a suspicious concoction, claiming it was intended to “fortify” the minister. Their actions raised red flags, prompting the minister to alert security personnel, who swiftly intervened and arrested the pair.
Preliminary investigations suggest that this is not the first time the suspects have used the name of the Nayiri to deceive high-profile individuals for personal gain. Police are continuing their investigations, and the suspects are expected to be charged accordingly.
Authorities are urging the public, especially government officials and traditional leaders, to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities and to verify the identities of individuals making claims on behalf of respected personalities.
