Reverse the GHC1 levy on fuel immediately, or we’ll embark on an industrial action from June 10 – GPRTU

June 5, 2025
GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has called on the government to, with immediate effect, withdraw approval of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introducing a GHS1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.

Industrial Relations Officer for the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, served notice that commercial drivers will embark on a nationwide strike action on June 10, 2025, should authorities fail to address their concerns.

Addressing a press conference on June 5, 2025, he said the levy would worsen the economic burden on drivers and passengers.

He admonished reversing the levy and engaging them and other stakeholders on the way forward.

He stated that ’’Commercial transport operators, including GPRTU of Trade Union Congress (TUC), are by this statement demanding immediate removal of the Ghc1 energy sector levy imposed on petroleum products. This levy, which is coming on the heels of the recent reduction of transport fares, will significantly increase operational costs, resulting in loss of income, which will affect our livelihood and the general public.

We are therefore calling on the government to reverse the levy immediately and engage us and major stakeholders on the way forward. In the event that our call is not heeded, we will be compelled to take industrial action and park our vehicles on June 10, 2025. We urge the government to consider the impact of the levy on the transport sector and the consequences of our action on the economy and engage us in meaningful deliberations to help address challenges in the energy sector.’’
