An unfortunate scene unfolded at the Asamankese Central Mosque during the Eid celebrations, leaving celebrants in shock as a heated verbal exchange occurred between an alleged outgoing National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) operative and the Member of Parliament for Lower West Akyem, Hon. Owen Kwame Frempong.
The incident reportedly began when Hon. Frempong criticised the NIB operative, Dabila Ferdinand—who arrived late to the event—over his handling of recent issues in the municipality.
This included a misunderstanding between the Asamankese Traditional Authorities and the Muslim community, who were accused of defying the ban on noise-making by using a public address system during Eid prayers. The traditional authorities intervened, seizing the PA system and creating tension at the venue.
The NIB officer, who arrived later for what was described as inventory and interrogation, was confronted by the MP, who expressed dissatisfaction with his perceived lack of commitment and professionalism since assuming his post. The MP also linked his concerns to previous complaints that allegedly led to the officer’s transfer.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation escalated when the NIB officer, reportedly angered by the MP’s remarks, responded with disrespectful comments. The altercation drew the attention of many celebrants, who condemned the officer’s behaviour as inappropriate and disrespectful toward an elected representative.
Some residents have long voiced concerns about the conduct of the NIB operative, accusing him of unethical behaviour, including alleged bribery, extortion, and intimidation—particularly in mining communities where both illegal and small-scale miners operate. These allegations, reportedly brought to the MP’s attention, have been interpreted by some as the basis for the lawmaker’s criticism, which others see as being misconstrued by the officer as a personal vendetta.
Despite reports of his transfer months ago, the officer is said to remain at post, fuelling further discontent among residents. They are now calling on the NIB hierarchy to take decisive action against the officer for what they describe as gross misconduct and public insubordination.
When contacted, Hon. Owen Kwame Frempong confirmed the incident, described it as unfortunate, and stated that he intends to officially report the officer’s behaviour to his superiors.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the NIB operative, Dabila Ferdinand, were unsuccessful. He declined to speak on the matter and directed journalists to the District Police Commander for further information.
Residents continue to demand immediate sanctions against the officer, citing his alleged pattern of misconduct and his public disrespect toward their MP.
