The Central North Regional Police Command has arrested three Chinese nationals involved in unauthoried mining activities in the River Pra at Twifo Denyase, located in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.
A 25-member task force, led by Regional Commander DCOP Abraham Acquaye, executed the operation under the directive of Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
The police seized two pump-action guns, 22 cartridges, and two excavators during the raid, and destroyed chanfan machines suspected to be used in the illegal mining operations.
According to DCOP Acquaye, who briefed the press, several Ghanaian accomplices fled the scene upon the police’s arrival, with some swimming across the river to evade capture, while the Chinese suspects were found and arrested at their residence.
This operation is part of the Central North Regional Police Command’s broader initiative to combat illegal mining, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey.’
Over a four-day period, the command has arrested 23 suspects involved in such activities and confiscated six excavators, along with other heavy mining equipment; equipment that could not be transported was destroyed on-site to prevent further illegal use.
Despite these efforts, DCOP Acquaye noted challenges faced by the police, including interference from local political figures and influential individuals attempting to disrupt operations, as well as resource constraints such as the need for bulletproof vests, life jackets, and vehicles essential for personnel safety and effectiveness.
DCOP Acquaye reaffirmed the command’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
