The Member of Parliament for the Tain constituency, Hon. Adama Sulemana, has shed light on the recent closure of 64 radio stations due to non-compliance with the Electronic Communications Act, 2008.
According to Hon. Sulemana, the regulatory requirement for radio stations to renew their authorisation licences every 5 years has not been adhered to by some stations.
The MP emphasised that the non-compliance is not limited to any particular group or affiliation but rather a mix of community, religious, and other types of stations.
Hon. Sulemana welcomed the President’s directive to grant a grace period for the affected stations to regularise their licences and rectify any infractions.
He stressed the importance of fairness and consistency in the application of the law, noting that those who criticised previous closures should also be critical of this situation.
According to him, the president’s decision is a gesture to support freedom of speech and the media landscape in Ghana.
The MP’s comments come as the affected radio stations prepare to take advantage of the grace period to regularise their operations.
