The Ghana National Fire Service has commended the government for its decision to retool the Service and introduce a new insurance package for firefighters, as announced during the passing-out parade of Course 55.
The Service welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement that his administration will allocate GHS1 billion to upgrade the country’s security agencies, including the Ghana National Fire Service.
This decision follows a recent Security Council meeting where President Mahama highlighted operational challenges facing the Fire Service and Ghana Police Service.
The President stated that the allocation of GHS1 billion for retooling purposes will address some of these challenges, particularly for the Fire Service, which he noted requires urgent equipment upgrades.
D02 Desmond Ackah, Public Relations Officer for the GNFS, described the announcement as positive news, stating that the retooling of the Service will enable it to serve Ghanaians more effectively.
He stated that President Mahama’s announcement to allocate Ghc1 billion, which will benefit the GNFS, is also positive news. The GNFS retooling is fantastic and will greatly improve our ability to serve Ghanaians. President Mahama has consistently promised to retool the Service.
With the allocation of Ghc 1 billion, the GNFS will receive its share. If we are retooled, we will have more equipment to better serve Ghanaians,” he stated.
He emphasised the importance of public advocacy and education in reducing fire outbreaks.
He appealed to corporate Ghana and other individuals with an interest in the GNFS extend a helping hand by donating drones, utility vehicles, PA Systems, firefighting motorbikes and other items to help them towards their public education and campaign.
D02 Ackah welcomed the insurance package announced by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak.
The insurance package provides compensation for non-permanent injuries in the line of duty (GH 50,000), permanent injuries (GH 100,000.00), and death of an officer on duty.
Natural deaths while in service will also receive a GHɻ 50,000.00 benefit.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM praised the Minister, saying, “We are thrilled with the news.” We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. As the Minister stated, this is only the beginning, and we are confident that additional benefits will follow”.
