The Ghana National Fire Service in the Bono East Region has embarked on an operation dubbed ‘No Cooking in Our Markets’.
The decision was made by the GNFS team to help reduce fire outbreaks in various marketplaces, especially in the Bono Region.
Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Rev. Naomi Ofori-Adubea Sarpong, explained that the service had cautioned traders against cooking in markets, as it often causes fire outbreaks.
According to ACFO II Rev. Naomi Ofori-Adubea Sarpong, a task force has been formed to monitor and prevent traders from cooking in the market.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she confirmed that during an inspection, the team seized cooking utensils and other items belonging to some traders involved in cooking activities at the Techiman Market.
She stated that the GNFS remains committed to reducing the number of fire outbreaks in the region and will continue to roll out effective measures in collaboration with residents and other stakeholders.
“Since taking over, we have embarked on public education and advised traders against activities that can trigger fire outbreaks. We consistently told them that cooking in the markets was not advisable, but they keep breaching these guidelines. So we have to enforce them in the interest and safety of everyone.
I can confirm that we seized some items from the traders and have asked them to come for them and take them home. They should cook their meals at home and bring them to the market to sell. Cooking in the market is not allowed.”
