National identification staff have begun an indefinite strike over delayed operational allowance.
The strike action is being organised specifically by the members of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) at the National Identification Authority (NIA).
They are disappointed in what they described as protracted delays and broken assurances from the Ministry of Finance regarding the payment of their Operational Support Allowance.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, General Secretary of PSWU Bernard Agyei said the allowance, which serves as a supplement, has been in arrears since January 2025, and yet, the authorities have refused to pay.
He stated that the ongoing strike should not be seen as a political agenda but as an action aimed at addressing their concerns.
He stated that they had no choice but to strike after the final round of negotiations with the Ministry on June 23, 2025, produced no positive results.
He claimed that they were told that the allowance was not included in the budget.
Mr Agyei stated that they will only engage with authorities if discussions result in “prompt and full payment” of the outstanding allowance.
He announced that members of PSWU at the NIA have been asked to withdraw their services effective immediately.
