The Member of Parliament for Offinso North, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, has raised serious concerns in Parliament about the growing problem of drug abuse in Ghana, particularly among the youth.
Dr Asamoah highlighted the alarming rise in polysubstance abuse, where individuals consume multiple drugs simultaneously, complicating treatment and prevention efforts. He also warned about the emergence of methamphetamine laboratories in the country and the increasing misuse of drugs such as tramadol.
He called for a strategic national response, urging the government and security services to act swiftly to prevent Ghana from descending into a drug crisis similar to those experienced in other countries.
Specifically, Dr Asamoah pointed to the rise of methamphetamine labs in major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, describing the trend as a serious national threat. He stressed the urgent need to address both the production and widespread abuse of illicit substances.
The MP emphasised the vital role young people play in Ghana’s development and called for stronger support systems, including education, employment opportunities, and rehabilitation services.
“Saving our youth from drug abuse requires collective responsibility and strong willpower,” he said, adding that with unity and determination, Ghana can reverse the trend and safeguard its future.
