The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Hon. Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin, has raised concerns about the environmental degradation caused by illegal sand winning in his constituency.
Dr Arhin highlighted the risks posed to the community, particularly children who may fall into dug-out pits while fetching water, and called for urgent action to control sand extraction from riverfronts.
According to Dr Arhin, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory bodies must take a proactive approach to prevent further damage.
He also emphasised the importance of educating children about the dangers of illegal mining and welcomed the allocation of funds for school construction.
The MP suggested that initiatives like the 24-hour economy could provide opportunities for youth and divert them from engaging in galamsey.
Dr Arhin urged regulatory bodies to take a tough stance against those involved in illegal mining activities, stressing the need for collective action to protect the environment and Ghana’s future.
