The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested the key suspect in connection with the shooting incidents that resulted in the death of a queen mother in Gbawe, within the Greater Accra Region.
Public Relations Officer for the Regional Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng disclosed at ta press conference on Monday, July 7, 2025 that that the incident occurred on June 19, 2025, during a naming ceremony in Gbawe Zero, a suburb of Accra.
According to Superintendent Obeng, the suspect’s shooting led to the demise of the traditional leader, Perl Naa Dodua Bortey-Kaa, and also injured another attendee at the ceremony.
She narrated that the ceremony was organised by Ibrahim Nii Ayi Quarshi Solomon, and was attended by traditional leaders and Asafo groups, adding that some individuals with locally manufactured weapons began firing indiscriminately around 7 pm while the program was ongoing.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng further revealed that the suspect, Gilbert Awuni, popularly known as Starboy, was arrested from his hideout in Asokore Mampong, a suburb in the Ashanti Region.
She warned the general public to refrain from processing and discharging firearms without lawful authority, emphasizing that such actions constitute a serious offense.
