Hon. Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, Member of Parliament for Tempane, led a press conference with fellow Members of Parliament from Kusaug and Kusaas in the Upper East Region and Opinion Leaders from Kusaas.
Their purpose was to address the media regarding the recent security situation in Bawku and express their constituents’ unhappiness and anger over their treatment by Military Personnel.
They reported that on July 13th, unknown assailants attacked a military vehicle. This prompted an angry response from soldiers who subsequently beat about six people in the town, including schoolchildren.
During the press conference, Hon. Akanvariba revealed that six Kusasi residents were victims of the incident, with several others injured. “The situation is dire, and immediate action is needed to address the plight of our people,” she emphasised.
She called for compensation for those injured and the families of the deceased.
The MP stressed that while the loss of lives cannot be reversed, the military should take responsibility for providing support to the affected families to help them find peace.
“We need to see tangible actions taken to address this situation and ensure that our people are protected,” she added.
The MP’s call for action comes amid growing concerns about the security situation in Bawku and her constituents’ demand for justice and accountability.
Hon. Akanvariba’s press conference aimed to shed light on the incident and push for swift action to address the situation, ensuring that those affected receive the support they need.
Despite their grievances, the MPs also urged their constituents in Bawku to exercise patience, assuring them that the leadership is committed to their well-being and will not abandon them.
The Tempane Member of Parliament stated that measures are being put in place to restore peace and order in the community.
According to Hon. Akanvariba, they have presented their case to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, seeking his intervention to calm the situation.
She pleaded with the Asantehene to act swiftly to help maintain peace and order, allowing the people to live freely without fear.
