Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Hon. Rudolf Amoako-Gyampah, commemorated World Youth Skills Day in parliament, highlighting the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and personal development.
He emphasised that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is crucial for Ghana’s economic growth and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 4, and 8.
Hon. Amoako-Gyampah noted that Ghana’s youthful population (57% under 25) presents an opportunity for growth but also poses challenges, citing the alarming number of young people (approximately 2 million) in the NEET category.
He acknowledged past government efforts to equip youth with job-tailored skills but highlighted persistent challenges, including infrastructural deficits, limited funding, and policy limitations.
The MP urged parliament to prioritise legislation fostering inclusive, high-quality education and training for all youth, particularly marginalised groups.
He also called for increased budgetary support for education, digital and vocational skills training, and youth employment programmes.
He further encouraged stakeholders to collaborate in aligning training programmes with industry needs, offering internship opportunities, and supporting youth-led enterprises.
