The General Manager in Charge of Operations at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Mr Philip Kofi Senya has urged employers to take advantage of its digital platforms to enhance compliance with social security regulations.
These platforms, including the upgraded website and portal, an enhanced USSD service, and a new mobile app, aim to streamline processes for employers regarding contribution reports, payment tracking, and overall compliance.
Mr Kofi Senya stated that the introduction of these innovative platforms can ensure timely and accurate payments, contributing to the financial health of the social security scheme and ultimately improving benefits for workers.
He made the remarks in a presentation at the 2025 Employers’ Breakfast Meeting, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on July 15, 2025, under the theme “Strengthening Employer Compliance for a Sustainable Pension Scheme Through Digital Transformation.”
According to Mr Kofi Senya , SSNIT has, since 2020, increased its active establishments from 62,000 to 89,000 by 2024, in collaboration with employers.
He disclosed that in 2020, SSNIT expected 62,472 employers to make payments. Of these, 41,232, representing 66%, made payments in 2020, while only 30,611 (49%) made payments by the 14th of the month.
He added that although over 60% paid their contributions, they did not fully comply as required by law.
“So this is a challenge we have, and we want you, employers, to help us address it. Make sure you pay, but you pay on time,” he added.
In 2024, we expected 89,000 to make payments, with 79% complying, but only 43% complied by the 14th, as required by law.
In terms of employer registration, he said SSNIT registered 12,389 employers and 204,136 workers. These figures increased in 2024, with 15,049 employers and 274,000 workers registered.
Mr Senya added that they have successfully deployed a portal that allows employers and employees to join SSNIT on their own and make contribution payments, among other functions.
He stressed that the SSNIT digital platforms offer employers easier and faster ways to submit contribution reports, track payments, and ensure they are meeting their obligations under the SSNIT scheme.
Improving Efficiency and Encouraging Digital Platform Use
The general manager stated that through these initiatives, SSNIT will improve the efficiency of contribution collection, leading to better pension benefits for workers.
He advised employers to pay contributions on or before the 14th day of the month following the month in which the contributions are due to avoid defaulting.
Providing figures for employees who have registered through the various platforms, he said that in 2022, 63 employers registered through the portals, increasing to 73 by 2025.
He noted that as of 2025, 47,111 people have been able to validate their contribution reports through the self-service online, while 153,355 have used the USSD and Debit Card for contribution payments in 2025, a significant increase from 5,919 in the past.
Additionally, the number of people who have downloaded the apps are 76,452 for Android devices, 25,400 for iOS, and 953 for Huawei devices.
He was, however, quick to add, “But these are people who have downloaded. They have not used the apps, and so, if you have downloaded them, we are appealing to you to go and use them.”
Mr Kofi Senya urged employers to give SSNIT regular feedback so they can continue to improve, expand the trust, and spread its services nationwide.
